Something that often gets overlooked is whether or not the bass you just caught can tell you anything you may not already know.
Take for instance a bloody tail on a fish.
If you catch a bass with a red or bloody tail this more than likely tells you that bass are staging for the spawn.
The bloody or reddish colored tail is oftentimes a result of clearing a spot for a bed in preparation for the spawn.
Another huge help to an angler is whether or not there are any "leftovers" still in the mouth of the fish.
Ever caught a bass and noticed the tail of a baitfish sticking out of the throat of the fish?
Sometimes you'll even see the claw of a crawfish!
Yes, your lure obviously did the trick on catching the fish but noticing something that is still in the throat of the fish can be a tell-tale sign of what the fish are currently keying in on.
If you're storing your fish on a stringer or in a livewell be sure to periodically check for things that a bass may have spit out as well.
Pro angler Matt Herron once said, "When you put a bass in the livewell, they’re notorious for spitting up what they were feeding on. From there you can tell what color lure or kind of lure to throw the rest of the day."
So, the next time you catch one see if the bass is trying to tell you something before releasing it back into the water.
Time to go catch 'em!
