Backlashes are no fun.
It doesn't matter if you're a beginner, a professional angler, or somewhere in between - anyone using a baitcaster has to deal with backlashes.
Thankfully, most backlashes can be easily removed with the simple trick shown below.
Before picking through your line and potentially making matters worse give this simple trick presented by BassResource a try.
When doing this just know that it might not work the first time - and if it doesn't, just keep repeating the process.
Sooner or later the backlash will come out and you'll be back to fishing.
Two more things...
Similar to casting, having control of your spool by applying thumb pressure is also important when stripping line to avoid making a backlash worse.
Tightening the spool tensioner is another preventative measure you can take as well, if needed.
Secondly, remember to set your drag and spool tensioner back to their normal positions before making your next cast.
TIP: Here's an easy way to set your spool tension for whichever lure you're throwing. 1) Start with your spool tensioner tight. 2) Hold your rod out at a 45° angle with your lure hanging about 6 inches from the rod tip. 3) Release your spool and slowly loosen your spool tensioner until your lure begins to fall. You're all set! Make a cast and adjust as needed.
Time to go catch 'em!
