Catch Guarding Bass During The Spawn

Many anglers would agree that one of the best times of the year to catch bass is during the spawn.

Not to mention, it's also a fun time to catch them.

There's just something about spotting a bass on a bed, making a cast to it, and seeing the bass take your lure right in front of you.

As fun as it is to catch a bass on a spawning bed, it always seems to come and go in a relatively quick manner due to the entire process only taking about a month to complete.

The good news is that there are still fish to be caught even after most of the baby bass have hatched.

Bass guarding school of fry

Once the spawn gets to a point where fish are actually hatching from the eggs stay on the lookout for those freshly hatched fish, or fry, to school up.

The fry will oftentimes school up in close proximity of the spawning bed they hatched from.

It might seem like 'mom' and 'pop' have abandoned the little ones but rest assured in knowing that they may be closer than you think.

Largemouth and smallmouth bass alike will continue to protect the fry for the first week or so of the hatchlings lives.

This makes for a great time to catch those bass still guarding the school of fry.

Lures that can linger around the school of fry for longer periods of time tend to work the best.

This includes things like flukes, soft plastic worms, or even suspending hard baits.

If you're fishing a slowly sinking lure such as a weightless worm or lizard imitation don't be afraid to throw right in the middle of the school of fry.

The overall goal is to keep your lure in the vicinity of the school long enough to appear as a threat to the fry.

In doing so you're creating a natural defensive strike from the bass guarding the school.

Even if you don't see a larger bass nearby - make a cast to the school.

Guarding bass remain very aware of what the school is doing and will sometimes come from even 10-20 feet away to strike at whatever is threatening the school.

Time to go catch 'em!
